The Bluff

The engineering projects that are the focus of this investigation were directed mostly towards the improvement of communications. Each one appears to have been a discrete solution to a specific problem, and some may not have been addressing problems at all, but were simply ‘improvements’.

Perhaps the earliest major infrastructure project on the Capricorn Coast was the construction of the road between Spring Head, now generally called The Bluff, and Yeppoon main beach to allow traffic to pass from Yeppoon town along a coast road to the farms and pastoral stations further north.

Although the first road was blasted around the bluff in 1894, stormy seas and spring summer tides often made it impassable.

By the late 1930s the road had been built-up to the point where only sever cyclonic weather could make it impassable.
